Saldanha Harbour, on the west coast of South Africa, is one of the continent's largest and deepest natural ports. Named after Portuguese explorer António de Saldanha, its history as a harbour dates back to the 16th century when its potential as a sheltered anchorage was recognized by European explorers. However, its development was initially hampered by a lack of fresh water, which led to Cape Town becoming the region's main port. During World War II, Saldanha's strategic location made it a crucial convoy assembly point for Allied forces. The harbour’s modern transformation began in the 1970s with the construction of a dedicated rail line from the iron ore mines at Sishen in the Northern Cape. Today, Saldanha is a bustling industrial hub, serving as South Africa's primary iron ore export facility and supporting a thriving fishing industry, as well as a naval training base. Its deep waters continue to make it a vital maritime gateway and a key driver of the region's economy.
