Africa Map Art is a family owned and run business producing maps and map themed wall art from our studio on the Garden Route in the Western Cape.

Steve is an architect who has been designing schools for rural communities across southern Africa for the past 30 years. His interest in maps and local history grew during his travels to sites in some of the remotest parts of this region. Looking for a new challenge on retirement, the move from architecture to map collecting & design was a logical one.

As well as Steve (design & production), our small team includes Janine (administration and website) and David (GIS and satellite imagery). Together we are steadily building a catalogue of wall art maps and satellite images with an initial emphasis on the Western Cape but extending gradually throughout the sub-continent.

Our maps are designed at our studio on the Garden Route, and printed on site using the best quality papers and inks.

“I loved maps for a long time, but it wasn’t until I made them and put them out in the world that I discovered how not alone I was. People love maps. There is a special incandescent joy to how they respond to a good map that is different from the way I’ve seen people to respond to any other art form. They light up. They get greedily engrossed. They start tracing possibilities, thinking, interpreting, measuring: maps demand work, and this kind of cerebral work can be exhilarating.”
