Overview
Port Alfred lies at the mouth of the Kowie River along South Africa’s Sunshine Coast. Our maps show the irregular grid patterns of the streets of this coastal town as well as all of its iconic landmarks. These include the Kowie River which passes through the centre of the town, the Royal Alfred Marina, the suburbs of East Bank, Station Hill, Nkwenkwezi on the east bank of the river and the suburbs of West Bank, Beach Front and Forest Downs on the west bank of the river. All of the buildings and road infrastructure are shown as well as the line of the now defunct railway.
Map Design and Paper
The map is an original creation by our design studio at Africa Map Art. Data for this map has been compiled from various up-to-date sources including from the OpenStreetMap contributors. The map is available in four styles and on the following two paper options and canvas: a high quality 210gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish, which achieves excellent colour and resolution and is perfect for framing; a 260gsm photo paper with a smooth satin finish; and a 350gsm strengthened canvas. All of the options are shipped in a cardboard roll for protection. The canvas is unstretched and unframed.

History
Port Alfred, a town with a rich and sometimes turbulent history, began as a settlement for British settlers in the early 1820s. Originally named Port Frances and Port Kowie, the town was formally renamed Port Alfred in 1860 in honour of Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's son. The town's development was driven by the ambition to create a working harbour at the mouth of the Kowie River. Despite initial success and extensive engineering efforts, the harbour eventually fell into disuse in the late 19th century due to the development of better facilities elsewhere. However, the town experienced a revival in the late 20th century with the development of the Royal Alfred Marina, and today, it is a popular coastal town known for its fishing, river activities, and scenic beauty.
