Details

This map of the town of Knysna covers an area of 187km2 including the Knysna Estuary with its distinctive channel to the ocean through the Knysna Heads and 17km of coastline from Buffels Bay to Noetzie. All the important man-made features are shown including the two residential islands, Thesen Island and Leisure Isle, all the suburbs and residential estates and the sports facilities. The satellite towns of Brenton-on-Sea, Lake Brenton and Belvidere are also included and along the coast to the west where the town of Buffels Bay straddles Walker Point. The map provides detail of the urban infrastructure including urban areas, buildings, water & sewer treatment, HV power lines & sub-stations. All road infrastructure is shown, as well as the now defunct railway line to George.

The map is an original creation by our design studio at Africa Map Art and uses data from various up-to-date sources. Our default paper choice is high quality 230gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish which produces excellent colour and resolution perfect for framing.  The 260gsm photo paper with a smooth finish is an alternative option.

This map is currently available in a 90 x 60cm size, in a scale of 1:20,000 and is not a folding map. PLEASE NOTE:  A larger map of 120 x 80cm at a scale of 1:15,000 will be available soon.

We welcome personalisation and customisation requests, such as highlighting of specific buildings or features, adjusting the colour scheme, or the addition of text and images.  Please contact us for a quote.

This town of 96,000 residents is primarily built on the northern shore of the Knysna Estuary. Fed by the Knysna River, this important estuary opens to the ocean after passing between two large headlands made up of a type of sandstone known as the Peninsula Formation quartzites. These are popularly known as ‘The Heads’ and have become infamous due to the loss of boats and fishermen passing through their unpredictable waters. The town was officially established in the early 19th century and was formally declared a port in 1817, with wood from the surrounding forests being shipped to Cape Town and other South African ports. Due to the shallowness of the waters and the treacherous channel through The Heads, it was de-proclaimed as a port in 1954. Today, Knysna is a major Garden Route lifestyle destination, celebrated for its scenic beauty, the annual Oyster Festival, and its role as a hub for eco-tourism and outdoor activities.

Default Paper - If you intend framing these maps, then we recommend our default 230gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish.  The excellent colour and resolution is perfect for framing.

Satin Paper - Alternatively, as unframed posters you may prefer these maps printed on our 260gsm high quality satin photo paper.

Printing - We use pigment-based inkjet printing technology to achieve gallery-quality results. Unlike standard dyes, pigment inks offer exceptional colour accuracy, crisp detail, and archival longevity, so your artwork retains its vibrance over time.
