This map of the Hartbeespoort Dam, located 40km west of Pretoria in the North West Province, is a modern and detailed map that focuses on this important dam and its surrounding landmarks. The Hartbeespoort Dam, located on the Crocodile River, has a history fraught with challenges. While a Boer general, Hendrik Schoeman, first attempted to build a dam in the area in 1898, the project was plagued by financial problems and floods. The current dam's construction began in 1918 and was completed in 1923, with its official opening in 1924. The dam's iconic "Victory Arch" and Latin inscriptions on the wall symbolize the triumph over adversity in its construction. The dam has a capacity of 186,400 cubic metres. Today, it is a popular recreational area and a major feature of the Hartbeespoort town, although it has faced significant challenges with water quality due to pollution and the negative impacts of invasive water plants.
