East London Harbour, uniquely situated at the mouth of the Buffalo River, is South Africa’s only river port. Established in 1848, it has a history rooted in the 19th-century frontier wars and the port was a strategic supply point for the British military garrison in nearby King William's Town. The challenging river mouth required extensive dredging and engineering in the 1870s to become a viable port for large vessels. Today, it remains a working harbour handling the export of grain, sugar, timber and textiles. It is known for its roll-on/roll-off vehicle terminal, making it a key player in the automotive industry.
