The Port of Durban, commonly called Durban Harbour, is located on the Bay of Natal and has been a significant maritime site since European settlers arrived in 1824. Recognized as one of the few natural harbours along the eastern coast, its development was crucial for establishing a trading post. Once a treacherous natural lagoon, the harbour was developed in the 1850s through dredging and breakwater construction. It played a vital role in wartime logistics and with its accelerated growth in the 20th century, it became Africa's busiest port. With 59 shipping berths and a total area of 1850 hectares, Durban is a critical gateway for bulk raw materials and goods, serving as a vital link to the country's industrial heartland.
