Details

This map of Velddrif, located on the West Coast of the Western Cape, is a modern and detailed map that focuses on this riverside and coastal town and its surrounding landmarks. Velddrif lies where the Berg River meets the Atlantic Ocean, close to Laaiplek, Port Owen and the wetlands of the lower Berg River estuary. The town is known for its river frontage, fishing industry, salt pans, birdlife, Bokkomlaan and the traditional drying of bokkoms along the river. All of the buildings and the road infrastructure of this popular coastal town are shown.

Map Design and Paper

The map is an original creation by our design studio at Africa Map Art. Data for this map has been compiled from various up-to-date sources including from the OpenStreetMap contributors. The map is available in four styles and on the following two paper options and canvas: a high quality 210gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish, which achieves excellent colour and resolution and is perfect for framing;  a 260gsm photo paper with a smooth satin finish;  and a 350gsm strengthened canvas. All of the options are shipped in a cardboard roll for protection. The canvas is unstretched and unframed.

Velddrif developed around the Berg River crossing and the fishing activity at the river mouth. The name is generally understood to refer to a “field drift” or ford, where animals and travellers crossed the river before the modern town developed. Over time the area became closely associated with fishing, salt production and the processing and drying of fish, especially the bokkoms that remain part of the town’s identity. Today Velddrif, together with Laaiplek and Port Owen, forms a distinctive West Coast settlement shaped by the Berg River, the Atlantic coast, fishing heritage, boating, birdwatching and the wider agricultural landscape of the region.
