This map of Suurbraak, located in the Western Cape, is a modern and detailed map that focuses on this historic rural village and its surrounding landmarks. Suurbraak lies at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, between Swellendam and Barrydale, on the banks of the Buffeljags River. This print includes the village, surrounding farmlands, mountain slopes and indigenous vegetation that form part of the scenic Overberg landscape. The area is known for its peaceful rural setting, historic mission buildings, birdlife and easy access to hiking, mountain biking and the nearby Bontebok National Park. All of the buildings and the road infrastructure are shown.
Suurbraak was established in 1812 as a mission station by the London Missionary Society, providing a permanent settlement for members of the Khoi community in the region. The ribbon layout you can see in the map is a direct consequence — mission settlements were laid out along the watercourse with long narrow erven running back from it. The village takes its name from the nearby Suurbraak River, and over time developed into a small agricultural community centred on farming and livestock. Many of the original mission buildings and the distinctive church remain important landmarks, reflecting the village's rich cultural heritage. Today Suurbraak retains its historic character and tranquil atmosphere while serving as a gateway to the natural beauty of the Langeberg and Overberg regions.
Map Design and Paper
The map is an original creation by our design studio at Africa Map Art. Data for this map has been compiled from various up-to-date sources including from the OpenStreetMap contributors. The map is available in four styles and on the following two paper options and canvas: a high quality 210gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish, which achieves excellent colour and resolution and is perfect for framing; a 260gsm photo paper with a smooth satin finish; and a 350gsm strengthened canvas. All of the options are shipped in a cardboard roll for protection. The canvas is unstretched and unframed.
We welcome personalisation and customisation requests, such as highlighting of specific buildings or features, adjusting the colour scheme, or the addition of text and images. Please contact us for a quote.
