This map of Port Alfred, located on South Africa’s southern coast, is a modern and detailed map that focuses on this coastal town and its iconic landmarks. These include the Kowie River which passes through the centre of the town, the Royal Alfred Marina, the suburbs of East Bank, Station Hill, Nkwenkwezi on the east bank of the river and the suburbs of West Bank, Beach Front and Forest Downs on the west bank of the river. All of the buildings and road infrastructures are shown as well as the line of the now defunct railway.
This map is an original creation by our design studio at Africa Map Art, and is based on data from various up-to-date sources. Our default paper choice is the high quality 210gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish, which achieves excellent colour and resolution which is perfect for framing. A 260gsm satin photo paper is also available for those who prefer a different texture and finish. We welcome personalisation and customisation requests, such as highlighting of specific buildings or features, adjusting the colour scheme, or the addition of text and images. Port Alfred, a town with a rich and sometimes turbulent history, began as a settlement for British settlers in the early 1820s. Originally named Port Frances and Port Kowie, the town was formally renamed Port Alfred in 1860 in honour of Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's son. The town's development was driven by the ambition to create a working harbour at the mouth of the Kowie River. Despite initial success and extensive engineering efforts, the harbour eventually fell into disuse in the late 19th century due to the development of better facilities elsewhere. However, the town experienced a revival in the late 20th century with the development of the Royal Alfred Marina, and today, it is a popular coastal town known for its fishing, river activities, and scenic beauty.
