This map of Paternoster, located on the West Coast of the Western Cape, is a modern and detailed map that focuses on this old fishing village and its surrounding landmarks. Paternoster lies on a sheltered stretch of coastline between Saldanha Bay and St Helena Bay, close to Cape Columbine and the Cape Columbine Nature Reserve. The town is known for its whitewashed fishermen’s cottages, sandy beaches, rocky shoreline, seafood, spring wildflowers and views across the Atlantic Ocean. All of the buildings and the road infrastructure of this small town are shown.
Map Design and Paper
The map is an original creation by our design studio at Africa Map Art. Data for this map has been compiled from various up-to-date sources including from the OpenStreetMap contributors. The map is available in four styles and on the following two paper options and canvas: a high quality 210gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish, which achieves excellent colour and resolution and is perfect for framing; a 260gsm photo paper with a smooth satin finish; and a 350gsm strengthened canvas. All of the options are shipped in a cardboard roll for protection. The canvas is unstretched and unframed.
Paternoster is one of the oldest fishing villages on the West Coast, with its development closely tied to the sea and the rich marine life of the area. The name Paternoster means “Our Father” in Latin, although its exact origin is uncertain, with several explanations linking it to early sailors, prayers of thanksgiving, or local Khoi beadwork. From the 19th century the village grew as a small fishing settlement, known especially for snoek, mussels and crayfish. In more recent decades Paternoster has retained much of its traditional coastal character while also becoming a popular West Coast destination, valued for its simple architecture, seafood, beaches and proximity to Cape Columbine.
