Overview

Montagu lies at the western gateway to the Klein Karoo where the Keisie River emerges from dramatic mountain passes linking the Breede River Valley to the interior. The town was originally laid out as a relatively compact grid of streets in the fork of the Keisie and Kingna Rivers but now spreads across the valley floors. Framed by steep mountains and fertile farmland, historic buildings line the central streets, while orchards and vineyards extend outward along the river and valley slopes

Map Design and Paper

The map is an original creation by our design studio at Africa Map Art. Data for this map has been compiled from various up-to-date sources including from the OpenStreetMap contributors. The map is available in four styles and on the following two paper options and canvas: a high quality 210gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish, which achieves excellent colour and resolution and is perfect for framing;  a 260gsm photo paper with a smooth satin finish;  and a 350gsm strengthened canvas.  All of the options are shipped in a cardboard roll for protection. The canvas is unstretched and unframed. We welcome personalisation and customisation requests, such as highlighting of specific buildings or features, adjusting the colour scheme, or the addition of text and images.  Please contact us for a quote.

History

Montagu was established in 1851 as a farming service centre for the surrounding valleys and as a staging point on the routes connecting the Overberg and the Karoo. The town developed alongside the wagon roads and later the famous Cogmanskloof Pass, which improved access through the mountains. Agriculture, particularly fruit farming and irrigation along the Keisie River, shaped the growth of the settlement during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Paper + Printing

Matte Paper - 210gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish. This high-quality paper produces excellent colour and resolution, making it ideal for framing.

Satin Paper - 260gsm photo paper with a smooth satin finish.

Canvas - 350gsm strengthened canvas, shipped in a roll for protection. The canvas is unstretched and unframed.

Printing - We use pigment-based inkjet printing technology to achieve gallery-quality results. Unlike standard dyes, pigment inks offer exceptional colour accuracy, crisp detail, and archival longevity, so your art print retains its vibrance over time.
