Details

This map of Gansbaai, located in the Western Cape, is a modern and detailed map that focuses on this coastal town and its surrounding landmarks. Gansbaai lies on the Overberg coast between Hermanus and Cape Agulhas, overlooking Walker Bay and bordered by rugged cliffs, rocky coves and sandy beaches. This print includes all the features of the town as well as the surrounding fynbos and agricultural landscapes extending inland. The town is renowned for its rich marine life, whale watching, shark cage diving and commercial fishing. All of the buildings and the road infrastructure are shown.

Gansbaai was established in the late 19th century as a small fishing settlement and takes its name from the large numbers of Egyptian geese (“ganse” in Afrikaans) that once gathered around a freshwater spring in the area. Fishing, particularly for snoek, yellowtail and crayfish, formed the foundation of the town’s early economy, while the nearby coastline became notorious for shipwrecks around Danger Point. During the late 20th century Gansbaai gained international recognition for its marine wildlife, particularly the great white sharks and southern right whales of Walker Bay, and has since developed into an important tourism destination while retaining its strong fishing heritage.

Map Design and Paper

The map is an original creation by our design studio at Africa Map Art. Data for this map has been compiled from various up-to-date sources including from the OpenStreetMap contributors. The map is available in four styles and on the following two paper options and canvas: a high quality 210gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish, which achieves excellent colour and resolution and is perfect for framing;  a 260gsm photo paper with a smooth satin finish;  and a 350gsm strengthened canvas. All of the options are shipped in a cardboard roll for protection. The canvas is unstretched and unframed.

We welcome personalisation and customisation requests, such as highlighting of specific buildings or features, adjusting the colour scheme, or the addition of text and images.  Please contact us for a quote.
