Details

This map of Danger Point, located in the Western Cape, is a modern and detailed map that focuses on this rugged coastal peninsula and its surrounding landmarks. Danger Point forms part of the Overberg coastline between Gansbaai and Hermanus, overlooking Walker Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. This print includes the Danger Point Lighthouse, the nearby villages of Gansbaai,  Kleinbaai and Franskraal, together with the rocky shoreline, coastal dunes and surrounding fynbos landscapes. The peninsula is renowned for its dramatic coastline, abundant marine life, whale watching and its proximity to Dyer Island and the marine reserves of the area. All of the buildings and the road infrastructure are shown.

Danger Point has long been recognised as one of South Africa's most hazardous stretches of coastline, with numerous ships wrecked on its reefs and rocky shores. The most famous of these was the British troopship Birkenhead, which sank in 1852, giving rise to the enduring tradition of the "Birkenhead Drill", where soldiers stood fast while women and children were evacuated first. To improve maritime safety, the Danger Point Lighthouse was completed in 1895 and remains an important navigational landmark. Today the peninsula and its neighbouring settlements of Gansbaai, Kleinbaai and Franskraal are closely associated with fishing, marine tourism, whale watching and the remarkable natural beauty of the Overberg coast.

Map Design and Paper

The map is an original creation by our design studio at Africa Map Art. Data for this map has been compiled from various up-to-date sources including from the OpenStreetMap contributors. The map is available in four styles and on the following two paper options and canvas: a high quality 210gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish, which achieves excellent colour and resolution and is perfect for framing;  a 260gsm photo paper with a smooth satin finish;  and a 350gsm strengthened canvas. All of the options are shipped in a cardboard roll for protection. The canvas is unstretched and unframed.

We welcome personalisation and customisation requests, such as highlighting of specific buildings or features, adjusting the colour scheme, or the addition of text and images.  Please contact us for a quote.
